Mezzosoprano KS Eva Randová had been a soloist of the Ostrava Opera and the National Theatre in Prague. After 1969 also entered the prestigious international stage - as a guest at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Paris, Munich, Vienna, London or San Francisco. Since September 1970 she was a soloist in Stuttgart, from September 1, 1980 she was simultaneously engaged in New York (Metropolitan Opera) for Wagnerian roles. In the years 1995-1998 she returned to Prague to serve as director of the Prague State Opera. Her compelling and engrossing dramatic expression had applied eg. in the roles of Kostelnička and Kabanicha, which she sang at London’s Covent Garden in 1986 and 1994. Currently she still has been teaching vocal technique and interpretation at vocal master classes.

KS Peter Dvorský studied at the Conservatory in Bratislava. He made his debut on the stage of the Slovak National Theater as Lensky in Eugen Onegin. In 1973 Peter Dvorský won the Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský Singing Competition. In 1974 he became a laureate of the International Singing Competition in Moscow. Since 1977 he has been a regular guest at the Vienna State Opera. Peter Dvorský achieved great success on more than 60 opera stages in twenty-five countries around the world, including New York Metropolitan Opera, La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London, Munich Opera, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Zurich. The Vienna State Opera awarded him the title of chamber singer. Since 2001 Peter Dvorský has been chairing the jury of the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary. Peter Dvorský was awarded the 2012 Centrope Prize, in April 2013 he was awarded the Enrika Caruso Prize. In 2013-2018 Peter Dvorský served as the director of the Slovak Institute in Rome, Italy.

Maestro Antonio Carangelo, tenor, is a native of Lecca (Italy). He had his musical training at the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva and the Accademie d´arte Lirica in Osimo, Italy, and perfected his vocal technique with Maestro Mario del Monaco and Maestro Ettore Campogalliani. He made his first professional operatic appearance as Nemorino in L´Elisir d´Amore at the Teatro de Saint Etienne in 1979. He went on to sing leading tenor roles in operas as Rigoletto, La traviata, Macbeth, Ernani, L’elisir d’amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, Tosca, La Bohème, Gianni Schicchi, Madame Butterfly, Werther, Don Giovanni, with opera companies in France, Switzerland, England, Italy and the USA. In recent years he also dedicated himself to intensive vocal teaching. He has grounded his own Academy in Vienna Carangelo Academy and he is leading master classes all over the world. Since 2007 he has been a member of the international expert jury of the International Antonin Dvorak Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary.

Conductor Jiří Štrunc studied violin at the Plzeň Conservatory and conducting at the Academy of Music in Prague. He then made a study visit to the Guildhall School of Music in London (1993) and attended master classes with Helmuth Rilling. He won several awards from the 1995 Prague Spring Conducting Competition. Since 1997 he has held the post of conductor-in-residence at the J.K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň. In 2006–2011 Jiří Štrunc was permanent conductor at the State Opera Prague, since January 2012 he is permanent conductor at the National Theatre Opera. From 1996–2000, he was conductor of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, in the 2010/2011 season, he was principal conductor of this orchestra whose chief guest conductor he has remained to this day. Since 2004, he has worked regularly with the Gunma Symphony Orchestra and with the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra in Japan. He has regularly performed at the International Music Festivals Prague Spring and Smetana Litomyšl. Jiří Štrunc has served as an instructor at the Plzeň Conservatory since 1992. In 2009–2011 he taught in the Department of Conducting at the Academy of Music in Prague.

The Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra is a partner of the organizer on this project. This significant professional music ensemble has almost 200 years old history and tradition.

    

 

The main mission of the Master Singing Courses in 2020

 

a) Pedagogic and artistic work of professors with participants represents a significant part of the workshop, above all improvement of singing technique as well as interpretation of specific styles, songs and arias, on the precise performing in the original language etc. (some more demanding operetta arias can be practiced with piano as well).

 

b) Practice with conductor and orchestra focused on interpretation or arias from the world operas.

Master singing courses imply the simultaneous preparing for the International Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition.

The application for the workshop will be accepted from all those, who fulfill the conditions of Master singing courses 2020.

Participants are not allowed to bring their own accompanist. Organizers of the workshop will provide accompanists for all participants.

The seminar shall be opened only if there are at least 6 participants in each class (maximum 10 participants).

Practice with conductor and orchestra

Classes A, B and C will participate independently in rehearsals with conductor and the orchestra according to the schedule.

For the rehearsals with orchestra the participants will write two arias from repertory list in their application (that they can sing them by heart). The arias trained with orchestra should not be longer than 6 minutes. Conductor Jiří Štrunc after consultation with the teachers will decide of one or two arias the participant will rehearse with the orchestra, while the suitable choice of repertoire and the voice disposition of the participant are decisive aspects.

Decision who will perform at the final concert, is dependent on the result of artistic collaboration with the orchestra.

 

Description of the seminar

               

In the Classes the participants get ready for the rehearsals with an orchestra, they improve their singing technique, they prepare interpretations of song and opera arias, they have a chance of monitoring the correct pronunciation and the right selection for the competition tasks for the International Antonin Dvorak Singing Competition.

On Sunday afternoon, after the morning class, the program and the performers for a chamber concert will be announced. The chamber concert will take place on Monday March 2, 2020 in the Congress Hall of the Hotel Kriváň accompanied by piano within the evening frequency.

On Wednesday March 4, 2020 in the evening the program of the final concert will be decided. The final concert will take place on Friday March 6, 2020 at 19:30 in Lazne III / Bad III.

Conditions for Participation

b) The active participant prepares:

  • for work with orchestra: 2 arias sung by heart, chosen from the Repertory annex (orchestral music material is available only for arias written in the Repertory Annex).
  • any other opera or song repertory as per his/her choice for the work with professor

The perfect knowledge of prepared arias and songs is indispensable for good and high-quality work with pedagogues and with orchestra. The program of the final concert will be set according to the decision of conductor and professors. The concert will take place on Friday March 6, 2020.

c) The participant pays the workshop fee in time. The whole workshop fee is to be sent to this bank account till January 15, 2020.

In the case the applicant cannot participate for serious reasons, the registration fee,

after deduction of the 15% handling fee, will be returned to the account of the applicant.

FEE - 400 EUR

  • Active everyday participation on lessons in the chosen interpretation class.
  • Regarding the decision of the artistic leadership of the seminar participants will perform at the chamber concert on Monday March 2, 2020.
  • Active participation on two rehearsals with orchestra. After the second rehearsal with orchestra the program of the final concert will be decided (including performing singers).
  • Accommodation including breakfast for the period February 29 - March 7, 2020.

The fee includes:

  1. A leadership of the classes by the professors KS Eva Randová, KS Peter Dvorský and Maestro Antonio Carangelo with their accompanists.
  2. An honorarium of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra for rehearsals and the concert and a rent for the hall for rehearsals and the concert.
  3. An artistic leadership, preparation as well as realization of rehearsals with the orchestra by conductor Jiří Štrunc.
  4. A rent of the hall for classrooms in the hotel complex Kriváň and pianos tuning.
  5. Accommodation including breakfast with another participant of the seminar in double bedroom in a hotel in the spa center of Karlovy Vary.
  6. A photograph of all participants with pedagogues.
  7. A certificate of participation in the workshop, signed by all pedagogues and conductor.

Accommodation (same for all assigned classes)

Participants are during their stay accommodated with other participant of the seminar in double bedrooms including breakfast in a hotel in the spa center of Karlovy Vary.

-         In case the participants ask for accommodation in a single bedroom, there is an additional fee of 200 CZK /night to be paid at the registration (regarding a free capacity of the hotel).

-     Should a participant of the seminar ask for accommodation out of above-mentioned dates (he/she comes earlier or leaves later), the organizer shall reserve a room for him/her at his/her own costs - the symbolic price of the room including breakfast being 450 CZK. In case of an individual accommodation (in a single bedroom - regarding a free capacity of the hotel) the price is 600 CZK per night including breakfast.

     Accommodation is not covered for accompanying people (e.g. pedagogues, family members), however, the organizer will reserve accommodation for them upon request for a reasonable price 600 CZK per night including breakfast, in case of a single bedroom for 700 CZK per night including breakfast (regarding a free capacity of the hotel).
